About the Gold Eagle
A design rooted in America's most admired coin
The obverse carries Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Liberty — the striding figure with torch and olive branch first struck on the 1907 Double Eagle, a design long regarded as the finest in American coinage. From 1986 through early 2021 the reverse showed Miley Busiek's family of eagles; a redesigned reverse with a close portrait of an eagle followed in 2021.
22 karat, by design
Gold Eagles are struck in 22 karat (.9167 fine) gold, alloyed with silver and copper so the coin resists scratches and wear far better than pure gold. Each contains its full stated weight of gold — the alloy is additional. They are issued in one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce sizes.
Proof and Burnished — struck at West Point
Beyond the bullion strikes, the Mint issues collector Proof coins (mirror fields with frosted devices) and Burnished Uncirculated coins (a specially treated blank), both struck at the West Point Mint and carrying its W mintmark. These are the pieces we list — issued in original government packaging with a certificate of authenticity, or professionally graded.
